Many of us were taught to read the Bible for information — to study, memorize, and understand it. Those are good things; don't stop doing them. But Scripture is also meant to be a conversation. God speaks through it, not just to our minds, but to our hearts.
Lectio Divina is one way Christians have practiced this for centuries. Instead of rushing to get through a passage, it invites us to slow down and listen for what God is saying personally, right now.
Here’s a simple approach to try this month:
- Read – Choose a short passage. Read it slowly. Notice any word or phrase that stands out.
- Reflect – Ask, “Why is this catching my attention today?” Sit with it.
- Respond – Talk to God about what you’ve noticed. Share your thoughts, questions, or feelings.
- Rest – Be still in His presence, letting His Word sink deeper into your spirit.
When we approach Scripture as a conversation, we begin to experience it as living and active (Hebrews 4:12). We stop treating it like a textbook and start receiving it like a personal letter from the One who knows us best.
So this December, in the midst of the busy holiday season, take just a few minutes each day to open the Bible and listen. You may be surprised at how much God has been waiting to speak.
