We often think listening is about catching the right words. But the most meaningful listening goes deeper — it’s about hearing the heart behind the words.
Dr. Todd Hall, in his work on relational spirituality, points out that healthy connection requires attunement. That means tuning in not just to what someone says, but to what they feel and what they might not yet have the words to express.
Jesus modeled this kind of listening perfectly. He noticed the woman at the well’s deeper thirst. He heard the pain in a father’s voice when he cried, “I believe; help my unbelief!” He listened beyond the surface, responding to the heart.
Here are three ways to grow in listening with the heart this month:
- Be curious, not rushed – Instead of jumping to conclusions, gently draw out the story behind someone’s words.
- Watch for emotional cues – Pay attention to tone, pauses, and body language. They often speak volumes.
- Invite God into the moment – Silently ask Him, “What’s really going on here? How do You see this person?”
When we learn to listen with the heart, we reflect God’s own character. He listens to us this way — fully present, deeply attuned, and patient with our process.
The same is true in our relationship with Him. If we only listen for information, we’ll miss His invitations. But if we tune in with the heart, we’ll start to notice the subtle ways He is speaking and leading.
This month, whether with God or with people, try to hear the heart behind the words. It might just change the relationship.
