The One Skill That Changes Every Conversation

And it might just transform how you hear God, too.

We live in a noisy world. Notifications, conversations, schedules, and responsibilities all compete for our attention. And in the middle of it all, it’s easy to think we’re listening when we’re really just waiting for our turn to speak — or worse, completely distracted.

Dallas Willard once said, “Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.” I’ve found that to be true. Listening, whether to God or to another person, requires us to slow down. It’s not just about hearing words. It’s about giving our full attention — mind, heart, and presence — to the one in front of us.

When we practice attentive presence with God, we create space to hear His still, small voice. We begin to notice His promptings, His comfort, and His invitations. With others, attentive presence says, “You matter. I’m here. I’m listening.”

Here are three ways to grow in attentive presence this month:

  1. Pause before responding – Whether in prayer or conversation, take a breath before you speak. This small pause signals that you’re actually listening.
  2. Remove distractions – Set your phone aside, close the laptop, and give your eyes and attention fully to God or the person with you.
  3. Notice what you notice – Pay attention not only to words, but also to tone, body language, and what stirs in your spirit.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about cultivating the kind of listening that reflects the heart of Christ — one that slows down, makes space, and stays present.

So here’s a question to carry with you into September: Who or what is God inviting me to be more present to right now?
