The Question That Could Change Someone’s Life

Why the way you ask matters more than you think.

Good questions are powerful. They can unlock stories, reveal hidden hopes, and even help someone hear God’s voice in a fresh way. Jesus used them often — “Who do you say I am?” “Do you want to be healed?” “Why are you afraid?” His questions invited reflection, not just quick answers.

When we learn to ask better questions, we help others feel truly seen. We also create space for the Holy Spirit to work in the conversation.

Here are three ways to grow in this skill:

  1. Be curious, not corrective – Ask to understand, not to prove a point.
  2. Go deeper, gently – Follow up with, “Can you tell me more about that?” or “How did that make you feel?”
  3. Listen for God’s nudge – Sometimes the best question will come as a quiet prompting in the moment.

You can also ask better questions in your prayer life. Instead of only telling God what you need, try asking, Lord, what do You want me to notice today? or How do You see this situation? Then listen for His answer through Scripture, reflection, or a quiet sense in your spirit.

This month, look for opportunities to replace quick advice with thoughtful questions. You may be surprised at how a single well-placed question can open a whole new level of connection.
